swatchin' the dog

 
I've been swatching the Great Pyrenees yarn, and I've discovered that I get a nice, slightly open fabric on number seven needles, with three and a half stitches per inch. Slightly airy, I think, is the way to go here, sine the scarf is going to be worn in the mild winter of Portland. And in case you need to know, Great Pyrenees yarn is itchy. I don't think I could wear it next to my skin. I'm not sure how Juno does it.....

When I got home from work yesterday, the package from the post office was here! Four hundred and sixty seven yards of sport weight Great Pyrenees handspun. It's beautiful, and although it doesn't smell like dog to me, the dog, who generally ignores my yarn, won't leave it alone. Really.... if I don't guard this stuff carefully, she will tear it limb from limb.....

Next step is finding a suitable scarf pattern.Suggestions welcome.

This is Juno. She's a Great Pyrenees who lives in Portland Oregon with one of my best, oldest friends. While visiting him last year, we got the idea of spinning yarn out of Juno's hair. We searched the internet for a company that could do it....here ....sent them a big pile of hair and waited. Last week, I got the call that the yarn was coming, and then the notice from the post office arrived...it was here. So this morning I hauled off to the main post office to pick it up, and it turns out the package is lost. So instead of showing you the Juno yarn that we've been waiting for all summer, I can only say that I am hopeful that it turns up.

Turns out that Juno is the perfect breed for dog hair yarn... the Great Pyrenees has long hair fibers that spin up very nicely. I'm scared to call my friend and tell him that the hair is lost somewhere in the bowels of a very large post office, so I'm going to wait a few days to see if it is found.

Paws and fingers crossed that the mystery is solved......
